Session 2: Guided Planning

Planning a Close Reading - An Overview

  • Select a text – a short piece of text (can be taken from a longer work) that is highly relevant to the unit of study (possibly a portion of an anchor/mentor text).

  • Read the whole text to get the gist and determine the purpose, with the CCS and unit of study in mind.

  • Re-read to annotate for textual evidence that supports the purpose.

  • Connect the evidence/details to the purpose by writing a short essay response.

  • Re-read a third time – this time to identify possible scholar misunderstandings.
